Humboldt’s Boleyn set for nationals

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — After a spring season that featured all kinds of unique and ever-changing weather conditions, Iowa Central’s Kelly Boleyn is looking forward to sunny and 85.

Boleyn, a Humboldt graduate, will compete at the NJCAA Women’s Golf Championship for the Tritons beginning here Monday. The four-day event takes place at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club.

“I’m excited to get to play along some of the best players in the nation,” Boleyn said. “And with other girls who love to golf as much as I do. I love this game and can’t wait to compete at nationals to finish up this unforgettable season.”

And the weather?

“It’ll be so enjoyable to play in some nice weather conditions finally,” she said. “To go from playing regionals in 30-plus miles per hour winds and 50 degrees to 85 and sunny will be quite a difference, but a welcoming one at that.”

Boleyn, who led Humboldt to a runner-up showing at the Class 3A state golf tournament and earned second team all-state honors, placed 12th at the Region XI Championship, earning all-region honors and a bid to nationals.

This past fall, Boleyn won the Iowa Central Fall Invitational, was the runner-up at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational and finished third at the Graceland Spring Invitational. She also was fifth at the NIACC meet.

“Honestly, it still doesn’t feel real that I’m going to be getting on a plane to Florida and it’s all because of golf,” Boleyn said. “I never imagined golf would take me this far and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity to play with players across the nation.

“My goal is just to play to the best of my ability after making a few adjustments after regionals and see how well I can improve each day of the tournament.”

In the latest rankings, Boleyn is 63rd overall. Seminole State, the defending national champion, is No. 1 with six players in the Top-10.
