COON RAPIDS -- The St. Edmond boys golf team picked the perfect time to record their low score of the season, shooting a 324 here Friday to win a Class 1A sectional.

Behind individual medalist Drew Schaeffer, the Gaels advanced to the district round, which will be played at Lakeside Golf Course this coming Friday.

Schaeffer carded a 75, including a 37 on his first nine holes at the Coon Rapids Country Club. Devon Wirtz and Caleb Schaeffer each had 82s with Peyton Scott carding an 85.

Riley Travis (88) and Ben Anderson (90) completed the counting scores for the Gaels.

"The hard work these guys are putting in is paying off," SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. "We went out and shot a 157 for our first nine with a 37 and three 40s. That was pretty impressive from them."

Conditions quickly turned, though, as rain came in and left the course playing a little longer over the final nine.

"It's a nine-hole course so we played the white tees for our first nine and the blue tees for the second," Dillon said. "Six of the nine were longer the second time around, but the rain knocked the wind down and helped."

Schaeffer's 37 was the low nine of the day, with Josue Ramirez of Coon Rapids-Bayard carding a 38 on his first nine. CR-B was second with a 343, and Earlham had a 346 to also advance.

"It was a great day to get everyone to finally play well," Schaeffer said. "We had a few guys play well in tournaments, but never the whole team. Thankfully when it really mattered, we were able to put everything together.

"We are excited to move on, but we realize the journey has only started. With districts, it will be another week of good practices. We are excited to advance, but state is where we all want to be."

Wirtz and Caleb Schaeffer had 42s on their second nine holes after 40s, with Scott going 40-45. Travis had rounds of 45-43 while Anderson had matching 45s.

The 324 team score was was nine shots better than the one St. Edmond posted at the CYO when they finished second overall to Carroll Kuemper.

Qualifying teams and individuals will begin play Friday at Lakeside at 10 a.m. from the four sectionals.
