Tritons rout rival to secure bowl game

Outside of two 30-minute lightning delays, it was nearly a perfect afternoon for the Iowa Central football team here Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

The Tritons secured a 62-20 victory over Ellsworth, sweeping the season series between the two ICCAC schools.

Byron Jarrett directed four scoring drives before halftime, Jayce Levy hit Desna Washington with a trick play that resulted in a touchdown and Iowa Central saw several different players find the end zone.

“We wanted to keep it fun for the guys and get back to enjoying football,” Iowa Central head coach Jesse Montalto said. “I thought we did that and were able to get some new guys touches with the ball.

“Our defense played great again, Byron had a strong game leading the offense and Zach (Marker) came on and showed what he can do.”

Jarrett racked up almost 180 yards of total offense, Washington caught two touchdown passes and Jaace Weidemann found the end zone twice in the second half. Weidemann started his high school career at Clarion-Goldfield/Dows before transferring to Belmond-Klemme.

One of the few low moments came in the form of injured players. Leading rusher Jadon Washington went down after a long play and offensive lineman Trey Winters was hurt.

“We’ll just have to see but we’ll probably be without them moving forward,” Montalto said. “Now, we need others to step up and step into roles. This was a good chance to see what some of them can do.”

Daylen Boddie and Alex Gully each had rushing touchdowns while Major Williams and Bilhal Kone scored on defense for the Tritons. Malik Adams, Dylan Cain, Tristin Waugh and Ryan Johnson recorded a sack.

Iowa Central found out its bowl assignment, as they will host New Mexico JC on Saturday, May 29 at Dodger Stadium in the Graphic Edge Bowl. The Tritons close out the regular season Saturday in Fayette at Upper Iowa University vs. ASA Miami.
