Wilkinson tosses no-hitter

Matthew Wilkinson had a memorable showing on the mound here Tuesday, tossing a no-hitter to help the Iowa Central baseball team sweep Iowa Lakes at Ed Barbour Field.

Scores were 10-0 in five innings and 13-3.

Wilkinson pitched the opener, striking out four with just one walk. Two other batters reached base on hit by pitches, but the Triton offense did more than enough to support him.

“It feels good to know that all the hard work put in is paying off,” Wilkinson said. “That was my first college no-hitter as a pitcher so it feels great. The team was great behind me the whole game.”

Ben Gallaher hit a homer and had a double, driving in four runs while Max Holly and Ryan Wickman each collected two hits. Holy, Devin Hurdle and Derek Kay stole a base each with Gallher also scoring twice.

Ben DeTaeye drove in two and all nine Iowa Central (20-8 overall, 12-4 in ICCAC) batters scored a run.

In the second game, Holy and Brock Johnson each recorded home runs as Payton Leonard picked up the win. Leonard went six innings, striking out five batters.

Jack Sievers had two hits including a double, and Holy drove in four. Kay, Sievers and DeTaeye each stole a base with DeTaeye scoring three times.

The Tritons, who have won three in a row and seven of eight, head to Boone for a weekend series with Des Moines Area on Saturday and Sunday.
