After entering Saturday with a 12-stroke lead, the Iowa Central men’s golf team didn’t let up, running away with their home invitational crown.

The Tritons finished with a 575 two-day total, 25 shots ahead of Des Moines Area. Mount Mercy was third, Kirkwood fourth and North Iowa Area fifth.

“Very proud of the way our entire team played Saturday,” Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. “Conditions certainly weren’t easy and the guys battled until the end. For us to shoot the low rounds in back-to-back days in a great field, I couldn’t be happier. The men have done a great job of seeing their potential and really working hard and practicing the areas that they needed to and have started to get things rolling.”

Austin Erickson tied with James Morgan from Kirkwood for meet medalist honors, as both golfers fired two-round totals of 142.

“Austin has been great all spring and it continued this weekend,” Graewin said. “Unfortunately for him, he gave a few shots back on his back nine or else he would have won going away after being 4-under par after 11 holes.”

Erickson followed up with opening day 70 with a 72.

“Saturday was another great performance from the team,” Erickson said. “I struggled with the putter on the way in. The team played a great tournament but we still got a lot more in the tank.

“Many of us left strokes out there over both days. These are things we will try to clean up before regionals, but all in all, I am very proud of everyone for another amazing tournament. But tomorrow is a new day and we are looking to bigger things.”

Liam Ross and Jor Forsting tied for fourth with matching 145s while Justin Schipper tied for seventh with a 148.

Tomas Ribeiro was 11th with a 150, Kyle Willie finished 24th with a 155 and Simon Mitchell was 37th with a 158. Lane Stanley placed 42nd overall with a 160 and Nick Tennis 49th with a 164.

Next action for the Tritons will be Wednesday in Onalaska, Wisconsin at the Viterbo University Match Play event. They followed that up with the North Iowa Area Spring Invitational on Thursday.

The Region XI Tournament is set for May 1-3 in Riverside, Iowa at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.
