Iowa Central men 2nd at DMACC Invite

ANKENY — The Iowa Central men’s golf team gave themselves plenty of momentum going into their own tournament, placing second here Monday at the DMACC Spring Invitational.

The Tritons finished with a two-round total 585 behind a runner-up performance by Austin Erickson.

Iowa Western was first followed by Iowa Central, DMACC and Hawkeye in a tie for third. Eleven teams comprised the field.

“Monday was a great day for us in a number of different ways,” Iowa Central head coach Kris Graewin said. “We were able to post our best single-round score in round one with a 286 and put ourselves in a position to compete for a title. It was also the first time we’ve played competitively for 36 holes. It was a great test and the guys now know what to expect for our regional.

Erickson fired a 142, just two shots back of meet medalist Jakob Falk from Iowa Western. Justin Schipper was seventh with a 145, Joe Forsting and Tomas Ribeiro placed 13th, and Liam Ross was 28th.

Erickson had an opening round 68 and followed up with a 74. Forsting had a 73 with a 76, as did Riberio.

“Another great day for Austin. He’s coming in this spring and is playing with a lot of confidence,” Graewin said. “Justin played really solid all day as well. His putter was really good and he chipped it really well. When he does that he’s really solid for us.

“It’s gonna be fun to see how we play at home Friday and Saturday. I know we’re going to have a lot of friends and family out and the team’s excited.”

The Tritons will host at the Fort Dodge Country Club on Friday and Saturday.
