Four Tritons reach semis at wrestling

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Bret Minor knew exactly who he was going up against with a spot in the semifinals on the line here Wednesday.

Minor was one of four Iowa Central wrestlers to punch a berth in the final four at the NJCAA Championships, moving one step closer to securing a title.

Joining Minor inside the Mid-America Center will be Keaton Geerts, Jose Rodriguez and Jorden Pryor, all who helped the Tritons to fourth in the team race.

Western Wyoming leads with 103.5 points and has all 10 wrestlers still alive on either the championship or consolation side. Clackamas is second with 95, Pratt third with 88.5 and Iowa Central sits with 83.

Minor knocked off defending champion and top-seeded Blake Gonzalez in the 141-pound quarterfinals, earning a 4-3 victory in double-overtime vs. the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M wrestler.

“Just all about performing when the lights are on,” Minor said. “This is what Coach (Luke) Moffitt and Coach (Troy) Bennett have trained us for.

“(Against Gonzalez) it was just all about wanting it more. He was the defending national champ and I wanted more than anything to knock him off. All the glory to God and I can’t wait to go have some more fun (Thursday).”

Minor had a fall and a major decision in earlier rounds, and will face fifth-ranked Creighton Baughman from Iowa Western in the semis.

Geerts, a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa, earned a pin, a technical fall and a major decision at 165 pounds, besting Jake Richardson of Clackamas in the quarters, 12-2. He will face Seth Brossard of Rochester next.

Rodriguez, a returning All-American, pinned his way to the semifinals at 174 pounds and will meet seventh-ranked Navarro Nanpuya of North Idaho. Pryor, a heavyweight, earned two falls and a major decision ahead of a bout with Curtis Ruff of Triton.

Aidan Harris is still alive in the consolation side, reeling off four consecutive wins after a first-round loss.

Harris will now take on Riley Weir of Labette.

Yoseph Yilma, Phil Smith Jr., Andrew Gamble, Jesus Gutierrez and Hugo Harp all had their tournament runs end.
