Dodger Relays next on the track for girls

For the first time in 16 years earlier this month, the Fort Dodge girls track squad won a team title.

Now the Dodgers will attempt to add a title at their own Dodger Relays to the mix.

Todd Constable’s team will host the 40th annual event at Dodger Stadium on Thursday.

The Dodgers will be joined by Humboldt, Webster City, Waukee, Ankeny Centennial, Mason City and Norwalk on the J.H. Nitzke Track.

In their second meet of the season, the Dodgers won the Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational.

“Winning at Waverly gave us a ton of confidence,” Constable said, “but we have to stay hungry and continue grinding to set up the best possible scenario we can for state.

“We want to peak at the right time around the district meet.”

Most teams only get one chance to run at home, and after missing an entire season a year ago, Constable is excited to back in town and in front of a partisan crowd.

“That’s the unique thing about track: normally you only get one or two home meets,” Constable said. “That’s what makes it more special. Fans don’t get to travel sometimes, so running at home in front of your family and friends is a big deal.

“I saw the excitement (Wednesday) in practice. This is important, especially for our seniors. They have one shot (in Fort Dodge).”

Visiting schools will have the luxury of competing in one of the most efficient and respected meets in the state.

“We wouldn’t be able to have such a quality meet without all of the people behind the scenes,” Constable said. “With (starter) Fran Long running it and the teacher and the community behind it, this is one of the best events around.

“There is a lot of history here because of the people behind it. Coach (Kevin) Astor (current athletic and activities director) does a great job, along with all of the volunteers.”

Starting at $4.94/week.
