Tritons cap trip with victory

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Iowa Central baseball team finished off a trip to Millington with a convincing 11-3 victory over Triton College here Sunday.

Derek Kay was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base out of the No. 9 spot in the lineup while Gavin Baker, Ryan Wickman and Jalen Martinez each had two hits for the Tritons (3-3 overall).

Baker, Max Holy, Wickman and Jack Sievers drove in two runs each, with Ben DeTaeye, Martinez and Ben Gallaher adding an RBI each in support of Devon Schewe. On the mound, Schewe tossed four innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven with just one walk.

“We were ready to go right from the start,” Iowa Central head coach Eric Stein said. “Devon had a nice first inning and our bats got rolling. Up-and-down the lineup we had production.

“When you have a guy like Derek at that spot in the lineup, he can really cause chaos and make things happen.”

Kai Reum struck out three in two-plus innings for Iowa Central.

Kay and Wickman each had a double with Martinez also recording a stolen base.

The Tritons are scheduled to return to action this coming weekend.

“No. 1 it was good to get on the field after all the weird stuff from last year,” Stein said. “We learned quite a bit about what we have and saw it over the span of four games. Now we have different scenarios we can work on and improve on.”
