SAN ANTONIO — Elle Ruffridge and the Missouri State women are quite content setting up shop here for an extended period of time.

The Bears, fresh off advancing past UC Davis Monday night in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, next take on Wright State Wednesday. Tip is set for 2 p.m. with the game airing live on ESPNU.

Just like the men’s tournament and Indianapolis, all of the women’s games are being played at sites in and around San Antonio. Missouri State (22-2 overall) and Wright State (19-7) square off at the UTSA Convocation Center.

Ruffridge scored 12 points with five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 26 minutes as the Bears stretched their current win streak to 18 in a row. They advanced to the Sweet 16 two years ago, and have gone 73-16 over the past three seasons.

The senior made 3 of 5 field goals, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and hit two 3-pointers. Three of her five rebounds came on the offensive end.

“It felt great getting the opportunity to play in the NCAA Tournament once again,” said Ruffridge, an all-stater for Pocahontas Area while leading the Indians to back-to-back state titles. “This whole experience is something not to be taken for granted.

“UC Davis is a great team and we knew that they were going to go on runs and whenever that happened, we just needed to stay together and focus on the next play.”

On the year, Ruffridge — Iowa’s all-time 5-on-5 scoring queen — is averaging just under nine points and two rebounds per game, shooting 43 percent from the field and 89 percent at the charity stripe.

Among those in attendance watching were Ruffridge’s parents, Brandon and Karla.

“We didn’t play our best basketball, but we got the jitters out and are moving on,” Ruffridge said. “Huge shoutout to all the Lady Bear fans in the crowd.

“We travel really well so having all of that support means a lot.”

Wright State pulled one of the few upsets in the first round, knocking off No. 4 seed Arkansas, 66-62. The Raiders qualified by winning the Horizon League Tournament.

“Wright State is very good and it will be another battle for us,” she said. “We’re all just thankful to be here this year because we missed out last year.

“We still have more to prove and are going to do whatever it takes to keep surviving and advancing.”

The winner between Missouri State and Wright State advances to the Sweet 16 and a date with either top-seed Stanford or No. 8 Oklahoma State.
