ICCC men can’t slow down Lakers

Photo by Paul DeCoursey: Javonte Keck led Iowa Central with 21 points in a 100-76 setback against Iowa Lakes inside Hodges Fieldhouse on Wednesday.

The end result of Wednesday night’s ICCAC contest between the Iowa Central men and Iowa Lakes was lost in the moment of what happened earlier in the game.

Cameron Tolefree, a freshman for the sixth-ranked Lakers was all that anyone from either team was concerned with.

Tolefree had to receive medical attention after a collision with PJ Ngambi left him motionless on the floor. Emergency personnel arrived shortly after to take Tolefree to the hospital.

“It’s just a tough, tough situation for all involved,” Iowa Central head coach Chad Helle said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Cameron, the Iowa Lakes team and coaches.”

Both teams elected to continue playing the game after the injury, with the Lakers going on to post a 100-76 victory.

“We knew coming in that Iowa Lakes was a team that could hurt you with a variety of scorers,” Helle said. “They showed why they are ranked where they are and just how effective they can be.”

The Lakers (10-3 overall, 10-3 in the ICCAC) continued to build on their lead throughout, outscoring the Tritons 57-30 in the first half. Ryan Hall had 24, Dillon Carlson 18, Xzavier Jones and Kevin Cook 16 each, and Jonathan Oden 15.

As a collective unit, Iowa Lakes shot 56 percent from the field and made nine 3-pointers.They also out-rebounded Iowa Central 40-26.

For the Tritons (4-8, 4-8), Javonte Keck had 21 points, Ngambi 19 and Jayden Stephens 13.

“We’ve just got to figure out a lot of things about our team,” Helle said. “We’ll do some good things at times, but revert back quickly to the bad.

“We have several games here left to try and figure it out and see what we can do.”

Stephens had eight rebounds to lead Iowa Central with Keck adding seven.

Iowa Lakes has won eight consecutive games since a loss to Southwestern.

The Tritons return to the court on Saturday when they head to Southeastern.
