Webster City advances seven to district meet

IOWA FALLS — Webster City advanced seven wrestlers to the district tournament on Saturday and earned a sectional title in the process.

The Lynx scored 210 team points and will now take part in a regional dual tournament on Tuesday.

Webster City will travel to Osage. The 16th-ranked Lynx will face 13th-ranked Emmetsburg in the first round. The winner will advance to the finals and meet No. 3 Osage.

On Saturday, top-ranked Camron Phetxoumphone (113), 10th ranked CJ Hisler (182) and Trey Shannon (220) won sectional championships.

Third-rated Carson Doolittle (106), Reece Sadler (126), Chase Rattenborg (132) and Austin Mason (138) were runner ups.

In his only match, Phetxoumphone (28-0) pinned Ben Sarver of Roland-Story in 2:58.

Hisler took a 10-6 decision over Eli Thorson of Roland-Story in his finals match.

Shannon (28-3) picked up a fall in 3:23 over Nic Warington of Iowa Falls-Alden to win the 220-pound title.

Doolittle (30-3) lost a tight 6-4 decision in the championship to fourth-ranked Kade Blume of Roland-Story. He bounded back with a fall in 1:01 over Jayson Stevens of Hampton-Dumont.

Sadler (11-19) lost in the finals, but pinned Jackson Kobe of Iowa Falls-Alden (1:50) to advance.

After losing in the finals, Rattenborg (27-6) earned a 2:48 fall over Hampton-Dumont’s Jakyb Kapp to move on.

Mason (17-16) earned a 7-0 wrestleback decision to advance.

AT WOODWARD-GRANGER

Greene County

Top-ranked McKinley Robbins (120 pounds) advanced to districts with two victories.

Robbins earned a 4-3 decision over No. 8 Cole Nelson of Perry in the championship match at Woodward-Granger. Robbins (27-0) was a state runner-up at 113 last year.

Brady Stauffer (138), Gavin Scheuermann (145), Nathan Black (160), Broc Hamann (220), and Sawyer Schiltz (285) were district champions for the Rams. John Sprague (126) and Noble Hoyt (170) were second.

Stauffer (25-4) and Hamann had falls in their finals matches. Scheuemann (16-7), Black (26-4) and Schiltz (22-9) recorded decisions.

Sprague (15-7) and Hoyt (13-12) both lost in the finals, but advanced by rule.

The Rams will compete in districts at Adel, ADM on Saturday.

AT SPIRIT LAKE PARK

Humboldt

Six Humboldt wrestlers will compete in their home gym for the district tournament after advancing out of a sectional here on Saturday.

Dylan Vaudt (113), Jase Goodell (126) and Ty Gargano (132) advanced as champions. Jayden Gargano (106), D.J. Muir (120) and Colten Goodell (220) were runner-ups.

Vaudt (18-6) took a 10-3 decision over Levi Dunn of Spirit Lake Park to earn the 113-pound title. Goodell (29-2) pinned Emmetsburg’s Ryerson Boevers (3:35) in the 126-pound final.

Gargano (16-5) won a 9-2 decision over Reece Eakins of Algona.

Gargano (26-7) dropped a tight 6-4 decision in the finals, but advanced by rule. Muir (19-16) lost by fall in the finals and advanced by no contest.

Goodell (25-9) lost to seventh-ranked Jordan Anderson of Emmetsburg in the finals, but advanced by rule.

Emmetsburg

Seven E-Hawks will compete in districts next weekend.

Sean Brennan (145), Cade Shirk (160), Matthew Wirtz (195) and Jordan Anderson (220) were sectional champions.

Ryerson Boevers (126), Ryan Brennan (138) and Ben Saxton (182) were runner ups.

Brennan (18-2 at 145) had a 2-0 decision over Brandon Harris in the finals. Shirk had a 9-3 decision over Humboldt’s Fletcher Satern in the finals.

Wirtz (26-3) pinned Tyler Jurva of Spirit Lake Park in 1:15. Anderson (27-1) over Goodell.

Boevers (22-6) advanced by rule and Brennan (1805) earned a major decision over Humboldt’s Colby Clarken to advance. Saxton (17-10) lost in the championship round and advanced by rule.

Algona

Jacob Zabka (106) was a sectional champion for Algona, and will compete this weekend with four teammates in Humboldt.

Zabka (28-3) earned a 6-4 decision over Jayden Gargano of Humboldt for the title.

Eakins (132) lost in the finals, but advanced by rule. Harris (26-6) lost in the finals, but picked up a fall in 5:00 over Brigham Vermeys of Estherville-Lincoln Central.

Meednering (19-11) fell in the championship, but advanced by rule.

AT CLEAR LAKE

Southeast Valley

In his first season as a wrestler, 10th-ranked Aaron Graves (285) advanced to districts in Humboldt as a sectional champion.

Graves will be joined by teammates Caelan Oakes (113), Zack Miller (160), Lathe Muench (170) and Harley Bryson (182), who were all second.

Graves (28-3) earned a tight 6-4 decision over Cole Jeffries of Osage in the finals. He had a fall in 4:27 of the semifinals.

Oakes (36-9) lost to Tucker Stangel of Osage in the finals, but bounced back with a technical fall over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Kaeden Langfitt to advance.

Miller (21-10) fell in the championship, but because he had defeaed Cadin Fleener of Forest City in the semis, he advanced.

Muench (33-11) lost in the gold-medal bout. He earned a 12-6 decision over Thomas Gansen of Clear Lake in the semifinals that pushed him through to districts.

Bryson (34-15) lost in the finals, but picked up a 11-2 major decision over Erick Perez of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows to advance.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows

Reed Abbas (138), Remington Hanson (145), Bryce Allen (152), Garrett Seaba (160) and Kain Nelson (220) were all district champions.

Ethan Traub (120) and Cale Kirstein (126) advanced as runner-ups, giving the Cowboys seven district qualifiers in Humboldt.

Abbas (30-2), ranked fifth, pinned Osage’s Max Gast in 46 of the finals. Abbas had a first period fall in the semifinals.

Hanson (25-0), ranked sixth, had the biggest win of the day, pinning top-ranked Nick Fox (29-2) of Osage in a 1:35 of the finals.

Allen (23-7) won in sudden victory over Joey Potter of Osage to claim the 152-pound title. Seaba (160) pinned Zack Miller of Southeast Valley (1:51) in the championship match.

Nelson (20-2) picked up a 34-second fall over Barrett Muller in the 220 pound gold-medal match.

Traub (25-9) and Kirstein (24-9) lost in the championship, but advanced by rule.
