St. Edmond back on the mat at home

St. Edmond 120-pounder Ryan Duckett will wrestle for the final time in the Gael gym on Thursday.

The senior will be honored on Thursday, when St. Edmond returns home for the third time in the last week.

Duckett is expected back in the lineup after recovering from a recent injury.

“We really wanted this to happen for Ryan,” said SEHS head coach Eugene Carlson. “This will be the last opportunity for him to wrestle in the Gael gym. Ryan is a tremendous kid to have had in the program for the last seven years (since middle school).

“We have grown together as a coach and athlete.”

Duckett, a two-time state qualifier, missed sectionals and districts last season with a knee injury, but has fought his way back this season.

“I have a lot of respect for how is leading this team,” Carlson said. “Ryan is a great influence on our program, and seeing him try to finish out his career (despite the injuries) is a testament to his strength.

“He is leaving a lasting impression on these younger guys.”

Joining Duckett in the lineup will be sophomore Ronnie Orres (106), junior Elly Berry (132), sophomore Emiliano Guillen (152), junior Grant Webster (170) and junior Tyler Rossmanith (182).

“Ryan just brings positive energy,” Carlson said. “You see the leadership coming out in Ronnie and these other wrestlers who have been influenced in a positive way.”

Algona and Hampton-Dumont will wrestle in a make-up dual to kickstart the competition at 6 p.m. St. Edmond will face Clear Lake afterward.

The Lions will then take on Hampton-Dumont, and the last dual of the night will be St. Edmond vs. the Bulldogs.
