No. 4 Dodgers head to W-SR

WAVERLY — The fourth-ranked Fort Dodge wrestling team will head to Waverly for a round-robin tournament with two Top-10 opponents in the mix here on Saturday.

No. 1 Waverly-Shell Rock will host the event, along with the Dodgers, sixth-rated Iowa City West, Waterloo East and Boone.

Action begins at 9:30 a.m. Each wrestler gets four matches.

The Dodgers are coming off a triangular sweep with wins over Ames (54-19) and Des Moines Roosevelt (69-2).

“This is a good tournament for us, given the COVID issues our schedule has (encountered),” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “Waverly-Shell Rock and Iowa City West have really solid lineups top to bottom.”

Fort Dodge enters with eight rated wrestlers, led by defending state champion and nation’s No. 1 Drake Ayala (126).

Also ranked for the Dodgers is Dru Ayala (No. 4 at 106), Max Bishop (No. 6 at 113), Lane Cowell (No. 4 at 120), Damarion Ross (No. 9 at 132), Dreyzon Phillips (No. 3 at 145), Kody Cook (No. 5 at 160) and Ben Egli (No. 4 at 182).

The Go-Hawks have nine-ranked wrestlers and Iowa City West has six.

Ranked for W-SHR Zane Behrends (No. 7 att 106), Bailey Roybal (No. 2 at 120), Carter Fecht (No. 3 at 126), Ryder Block (No. 1 at 132), Cayden Langreck (No. 9 at 138), Aiden Riggins (No. 1 at 152), McCrae Hagerty (No. 1 at 182), Jake Walker (No. 3 at 195) and Luke Walker (No. 3 at 220).

Ranked for Iowa City West is Parker McBride (No. 8 at 120) Kael Scranton (No. 8 at 132), Hunter Garvin (No. 1 at 138), Graham Gambrall (No. 3 at 152), Ashton Barker (No. 3 at 170).

Waterloo West’s Kaden Karns is third at 113.

“We are looking to keep improving our basic techniques,” Thompson said. “We need to be able to capitalize on our fundamentals and correct those mistakes.”
