J-Hawks too much for FD boys

The Fort Dodge boys were beginning to stage a rally against Urbandale in the second quarter, and found themselves a possession away from trimming the deficit back to single digits.

That’s when J-Hawk junior guard Greysn Schmitz attempted an alley-oop pass into the paint from behind the perimeter. The ball sailed above its intended target and went through the hoop for three points instead.

All Schmitz could do was laugh and shrug.

It’s just been that kind of year for the Dodgers.

Visiting Urbandale knocked down nine first-half triples — including Schmitz’s accidental swish — in building a commanding halftime lead on its way to a 71-39 victory over Fort Dodge on Tuesday night.

Schmitz had five of his team’s 10 treys in all, as the J-Hawks (2-4 overall) shot 64 percent in the first half and 59 percent for the game. Dylan Sams and Schmitz combined to make 8 of their 9 field-goal attempts, and the duo had 24 points total before the break.

Urbandale, which had only made 27 percent of its three-point tries before last night, led 42-22 and never looked back.

Sams finished with 18 points, with Schmitz adding 17. They were 13-for-17 from the floor.

A bucket by Dodger senior Averey Martin made it 42-25 with 5:21 to go in the third quarter, but Fort Dodge (1-8) was unable to get any closer in dropping its fifth consecutive decision. Martin led the way with 11 points.

Bradley Vodraska added nine for the Dodgers, who struggled from the field (13 of 39 for 33 percent).

Fort Dodge returns to action on Friday at home against Ankeny (4-4, 3-2) in a CIML Iowa Conference contest.
