FD wrestlers host Bobcats

The Fort Dodge wrestling team won’t have far to travel in their final tuneups before Des Moines, as the Dodgers will stay in their home gym for the final five pre-state outings.

The Dodgers begin the five-meet homestand on Tuesday — weather permitting — when they host Marshalltown. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. for junior varsity, with varsity to follow.

On Friday, the Dodgers host the CIML Iowa Conference Meet at 4 p.m. The following Thursday, Feb. 4, will be Senior Night against Des Moines Lincoln.

On Feb. 13, the Dodgers host a Class 3A, District 4 meet. The Dodgers will also host a regional dual on Feb. 10.

The Dodgers, who have had a couple meets canceled because of weather or COVID, are hoping to hit the mat despite the bleak weather forecast.

“We are definitely hoping to get this in,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “We are hoping Mother Nature cooperates.

“We need more matches and to get a consistent routine down.”

The Dodgers are coming off a second place finish at the Caldwell Waverly-Shell Rock Invitational on Saturday. Earning titles for Fort Dodge were fourth-ranked Dru Ayala (106), sixth-ranked Max Bishop (113), Cal Hartman (145), and fifth-ranked Kody Cook (160).

Finishing second was fourth-ranked Lane Cowell (120), No. 1 Drake Ayala (132), third-rated Dreyzon Phillips (152), and No. 4 Ben Egli (182).

“At this point, any live competition is important,” Thompson said. “With the cancellations and COVID, it has been hard. We need to be peaking and hitting a stride here soon.”

Top-ranked Drake Ayala will return to 126 pounds this week. Freshman Bo Cowell will be at 132. Kody Cook jumps up to 170. Senior Matthew Surles-Davis will compete at 160.
