Dodgers host Rusty Garst Invitational

For Ashley Beaumont and the Fort Dodge swim team, getting the opportunity to return to their home water felt great.

The Dodgers recorded six Top-10 finishes, placing seventh overall with 141 points as hosts of the Rusty Garst Invitational. Sioux City was crowned team champions with 523 points followed by Carroll, Decorah, Newton and Waterloo rounding out the Top-5.

After weather caused a meet last Thursday to be scrapped, Beaumont and the Dodgers made sure to take advantage of their chance to compete.

“The guys missed getting into the pool for that meet so we were just happy to be back in the water,” Beaumont said. “Obviously with the times the guys were going we are in great shape going into the conference meet.”

Austin Jorgensen scored the highest individual finish for Fort Dodge, placing sixth in the 500 freestyle. Jorgensen clocked a time of 5:35.95.

He also was seventh in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.61 and was part of the seventh place 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay. Joining Jorgensen on the freestyle relay were Brayden Huse, Blake Castro and Kevin O’Connor, as they went 3:57.84.

The medley of the same four posted a time of 2:01.14.

O’Connor was also seventh in the 200 individual medley with a clocking of 2:22.10 while adding a 10th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.55.

“The boys were outstanding,” Beaumont said. “Almost all of them dropped time with some of the biggest ones being Blake in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Austin in the 500 freestyle and Kevin in the 200 I.M.”

Castro finished 11th in the 200 freestyle (2:18.72) and was 12th in the 500 freestyle (6:05.45). Huse added a 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.53), Zach Thompson was 13th in the 100 freestyle (1:06.06) and 15th in the 50 freestyle (28.7), and Michael Miller 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:28.33).

The Dodgers return to action on Thursday at Ames before taking part in the CIML Iowa Conference meet next Saturday in Marshalltown. Fort Dodge will host a district meet on Saturday, Feb. 6 with Ames, Boone, Carroll, Des Moines Roosevelt, Mason City, Sioux City and Spencer in attendance.
