Adolph Kochendorfer and Mark Meister could agree on one thing following Monday night’s season opener.

Both coaches walked away feeling confident in the fact that they are moving in the right direction, after Meister’s Bishop Garrigan boys picked up a tough 70-65 win.

Seniors Angelo Winkel and Kyle Schaaf combined for 16 of the 18 points scored by the Golden Bears in the fourth, including 12 late to seal the victory.

Winkel, who has signed with Augustana University, finished with a game-high 28 points to go along with 17 rebounds and a blocked shot. Schaaf, who will play golf at Morningside College in the fall, added 27 and eight boards.

“We feel like we have a pretty good 1A and 1B with Angelo and Kyle,” Meister said. “We lost a lot from last year with just those two guys returning in terms of players with much experience. But we also knew Kyle was ready for a bigger role.

“And Angelo has improved his all-around game to get ready for this season.”

For the Gaels, Quinten McCarville had a team-high 23 points, including 15 in the second half to help erase a 10-point deficit. Drew Schaeffer added 15, Anthony Lacina 13 and Noah Simpson eight off the bench.

“I was proud of the kids for battling through a lot of adversity all night long,” Kochendorfer said. “Bishop Garrigan put a little run on us and we could have folded. But we didn’t. We buckled down and really got after it on the defensive end to make stops. That carried over to the offensive end, and the kids stepped up and made some big buckets.

“It’s always tough when you lose, but I thought we showed a lot of positives moving forward.”

Schaaf caught fire in the second quarter, hitting all four of his field goal attempts and both free throws to score 11 in helping give the Golden Bears a 38-30 advantage. Winkel had 16 in the first 16 minutes, including a 3-pointer to show his range.

“Kyle’s a great shooter and a tremendous player,” Winkel said. “We’ve been playing together for several years, and I knew what he was capable of. We just had other guys last year.

“We feel like we’ve got a good team again and are ready to make another run to state.”

McCarville, one of the more experienced players returning for the Gaels, found his rhythm after the break. The 6-foot-2 junior made five buckets in a row, the last of which was a three-pointer that tied the game at 52-all heading into the fourth.

“Quinten has played a lot of basketball and has prepared himself for the season,” Kochendorfer said. “He really showed that on the court.

“I was just proud of the effort from everybody, and am excited to keep building off this.”

After a back-and-forth start to the fourth, Garrigan took command thanks to three consecutive possessions by St. Edmond that resulted in turnovers. Schaaf connected on a three-point play and Winkel a basket.

Winkel also corralled the rebound after a Lacina potentially game-tying 3-pointer rimmed out.

Kellen Murphy added 10 points for the Golden Bears and both McCarville and Sean Flattery had seven rebounds for the Gaels.

Winkel, who showed his improved strength with a pair of power dunks during the contest, is a returning all-stater. He has now scored 1,288 points in his BGHS career and hauled in 680 rebounds.

“It was a great opening-night game,” Winkel said. “It feels good to get back out on the court and play again.

“We’ve put in a lot of work and basketball is a great opportunity to bring pride back to Bishop Garrigan and the town.”
