Gaels open NCC play

CLARION — The St. Edmond girls and boys get their first taste of North Central Conference action here Friday night against Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

Tip is set for 6:15 p.m.

It has been 10 days since the Gael girls (0-1 overall) opened their season, falling to second-ranked (Class 1A) Bishop Garrigan. They get another rated team in Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (3-0), who climbed to 12th in 3A.

Senior Leah Neverman led St. Edmond with six points and four rebounds vs. the Golden Bears, with Alyson Nieland and Avery Galles adding three each. Nieland also had a team-high five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Cowgirls have posted wins over Southeast Valley, Eagle Grove and South Hardin to start the year after qualifying for state volleyball in the fall. Seniors Raven Kinnetz, Morgan Middleton and Jadyn Jondle lead the team.

Kinnetz averages 19 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game, shooting almost 54 percent from the field. Middleton is at 17 points and 10.5 rebounds, with Jondle adding 12, six rebounds and five assists for Elizabeth Ennis, who has returned to the sidelines.

The St. Edmond boys (0-1) also played Bishop Garrigan to begin the year, falling this past Monday night, 70-65. Quinten McCarville scored 23 points with seven rebounds, as Anthony Lacina and Drew Schaeffer added 13 each.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (1-1) topped Eagle Grove before falling to South Hardin. Senior Mateo Martinez averages 15 points, 4.5 assists and three steals a night, with Connor Slate adding 13.5 and four boards.

These teams are scheduled to play each other on Jan. 19 inside the Gael gym.
