Gael boys stop C-G/D
CLARION — The St. Edmond boys picked up their first victory of the season, claiming a 62-57 triumph over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows here Friday night.
The Gaels (1-1 overall, 1-0 in North Central Conference) rebounded from a setback to Bishop Garrigan this past Monday night.
Hayden Mayer scored 17 points, Anthony Lacina had 16 and Quinten McCarville 13. Jackson Palmer, a sophomore, scored a career-high 12 to balance out the effort.
“Rebounding in the second half was the biggest difference,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We gave up too many second-chance buckets in the first half, but we got in there and mixed it up in the third and fourth quarters.
“I thought we played a little harder on defense, as well.”
An early three-point lead was cut to one at the break for St. Edmond, with the Cowboys taking a lead into the fourth.
Down 42-41, the Gaels used a quick 9-2 run to take the lead.
“Jackson and Hayden did nice jobs of pulling up and hitting some mid-range shots,” Kochendorfer said. “And both Quinten and Anthony knocked down some 3-pointers that really helped open things up.”
Connor State had 18 and Mateo Martinez 14 for the Cowboys.
St. Edmond has now won two in a row in the series, which continues Jan. 19 in Fort Dodge. Overall, the Gaels are 24-5 against Clarion-Goldfield/Dows in the past 29 meetings, including 4-1 in the last five.
The Cowboys fell to 1-2 on the year and 0-1 in NCC action.
Next action for St. Edmond will be Tuesday night when they travel to Burnside to face Southeast Valley.
