Warriors stop St. Edmond

ALTA — Coming into Friday night’s game, the St. Edmond offense ranked near the top of the state in several categories.

Alta-Aurelia found a way to neutralize the high-scoring attack of the Gaels, however.

Behind a ball-control, run-heavy attack, the Warriors posted a convincing 43-22 victory here on Homecoming by outscoring St. Edmond 21-0 in the second half.

Levi Sleezer ran for 147 yards and scored three touchdowns, Preston McCoy was right behind at 146 yards, and Cade Rohwer accounted for three TDs for Alta-Aurelia (3-3 overall, 2-1 in Class A, District 2).

“We knew coming in that if healthy, their backfield would be very tough for us to contain,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “We did a great job most of the night on first and second down. But on third down, we just could not get off the field.

“They got us all night, and add in the big plays, we just couldn’t overcome it all.”

Parker Oswald went over the 100-yard mark receiving, catching six passes for 104 yards including a 36-yard touchdown from Drew Schaeffer on St. Edmond’s (4-2, 2-2) first series of the game.

Schaeffer, the state leader entering the night in quarterback rating and yards per completion, was 7-for-16 for 116 yards but felt pressure all game long and was sacked four times.

Tyler Rossmanith added 67 yards rushing and a touchdown, with Sean Flattery returning a kickoff back for the final score of the game for the Gaels.

“We had some good, positive moments,” Dillon said. “But we’ve definitely got some things to correct here heading into the regular season finale. Those things have kind of hampered us here over the past few weeks, so we’ll just have to make corrections and figure out a way to improve.

“These kids have worked so hard and I know we’re going to finish out strong and head into the postseason with some momentum.”

Tied at 22-all after Flattery’s return to end the second quarter, Alta-Aurelia limited St. Edmond to just 15 offensive plays over the final 24 minutes. That included three sacks on Schaeffer.

Sleezer ran for 86 of his yards in the second half and Rohwer completed 6 of 7 for 70 yards, hitting four different receivers.

Andrew Elbert recovered a fumble for the Gaels, who finish things out next Friday at Dodger Stadium against Bishop Garrigan for Homecoming. Alta-Aurelia heads to North Union.
