HUMBOLDT — In their first postseaason appearance since 2015 the Humboldt football team picked up a 40-17 victory over Sioux City Bishop Heelan on Friday.

Behind junior quarterback Caden Matson and senior Gabe Gidel, the Wildcats (5-3 overall) advanced to the second round with a 40-17 victory over Sioux City Bishop Heelan (1-7).

Matson threw for over 200 yards and ran for over 100. He finished 10-for-18 with 233 yards and three touchdown passes. He ran 24 times for 140 yards. Matson also led the defense with eight tackles.

Gidel caught four balls for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

On the season, Matson has thrown for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has also ran for 907 yards and 13 scores.

Gidel eclipsed the 500-yard mark and sits at 574 with seven scores.

“It was great seeing our kids come out and compete,” said third year head coach Derrick Elman. “Last week was a tough loss to Gilbert. Our kids responded this week in practice, and came out ready to play.

“I’m very happy for our seniors, to get a playoff win at home — that’s special.”

This is the first time since 2015 that the Humboldt has had a winning season. From 2012 to 2014 the Wildcats qualified for three straight playoffs.

The Wildcats will travel to face Spencer (5-2) next Friday.
