Gibb victorious in senior event

AMANA — Judd Gibb added more hardware to his trophy case here Tuesday, capturing the senior division title at the NB Golf Cars/M&M Golf Cars October Shootout.

The event took place over two days of 36-hole stroke play for the Iowa PGA Professionals at the Amana Colonies Golf Club.

Gibb, representing Lakeside Golf Course, fired rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 total. He finished two shots ahead of Jeff Schmid and was tied for sixth in the open division.

Sean McCarty won the open title with a 1-under two-day total.

“I didn’t play well (Tuesday),” Gibb said. “It was a difficult day for me despite the conditions being great. I played better (Monday) in tougher conditions.”

Gibb had 15 pars and one birdie in the first round, playing the back-nine at even-par. He added 13 pars and another birdie during the second round, shooting a 1-over on the front-nine holes.

It has been a strong year for Gibb, who won the Iowa Senior PGA Professional Championship in August and the Pro-Senior event last month, as well as his PGA Championship qualification. The 1987 Fort Dodge Senior High graduate has 18 Top-5 finishes in all despite a choppy season due to the novel coronavirus.

In 13 Iowa PGA events, he has placed in the Top-25 in all 13 with 12 Top-10 finishes.

“Locally, we haven’t really had any real issues with (COVID-19),” Gibb said. “I missed some big events which was a disappointment, but everybody has had to deal with that.”

Gibb will head to Texas next week for another event, with plans to possibly play in Florida at the start of the new year.

“Hopefully we’ll all be back to more of a sense of normal life by that time,” Gibb said. “I’ve got a lot going on with our kids involved in sports, but that’s the plan as of now.”
