Early playoff pairings set

St. Edmond facing Madrid at home Friday; Dodgers head to Waterloo West on Oct. 23

The 2020 Iowa high school football playoff pairings were officially released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association on Saturday.

St. Edmond (5-2 overall) will face Madrid (2-3) in the opening round of the Class A bracket on Friday inside Dodger Stadium. Fort Dodge (3-4) will head to Waterloo West (3-4) on Friday, Oct. 23, for a second-round Class 4A game.

Madrid defeated Nodaway Valley (21-19) and Perry (47-0), losing to Woodward-Granger (49-6), South Hamilton (45-6) and Ogden (25-12).

The Wahawks topped Waterloo East (38-14), fell to Cedar Falls (39-0), then beat Anamosa (37-14) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (45-14) to start the year 3-1, but have dropped consecutive decisions to Dubuque Senior (45-7), Cedar Rapids Kennedy (48-21) and Dubuque Hempstead (52-14).

From the area, seventh-ranked Webster City (7-0) received a first-round bye in 3A. The Lynx will start their UNI-Dome quest on Oct. 23 at home against either Mason City or Gilbert.

Humboldt (4-3) takes on Sioux City Heelan at home this Friday night. The winner advances to visit Spencer.

In 2A, Algona (3-3) hosts Cherokee on Friday in an opening-round tilt. Greene County (5-2) is at home for an opening date with Red Oak this Friday.

District champion Southeast Valley received a first-round bye after finishing an unbeaten regular season with a victory at Pocahontas Area last Friday. The No. 6 Jaguars (7-0) will play either Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (1-6) or Belmond-Klemme at home on Oct. 23.

No. 8 South Central Calhoun (6-1) meets Sioux Central in Lake City this Friday. Emmetsburg hosts Eagle Grove (0-5) on Friday as well, with the winner squaring off against either Pocahontas Area (5-2) or Carroll Kuemper.

East Sac County (2-5) is at home against Missouri Valley on Friday, with the winner heading to undefeated and top-ranked OABCIG.

Either Manson Northwest Webster (0-6) or West Hancock will take on the Gaels or Madrid in the second round of the Class A bracket.

Bishop Garrigan (2-5) heads to Lake Mills on Friday, while North Union (1-6) is at West Fork.

Newell-Fonda (6-1) and West Bend-Mallard (1-6) play in the opening round of the eight-man bracket this Friday.

The IHSAA will continue to assign pods throughout the postseason. Geography and district placement in Classes 3A through eight-man were key determinants in pod assignments.

There were no districts in 4A this season.

Due to the number of schools in each classification, byes were used for the first round of the six-round playoff system.

Pods are being designated for the first round and second round, then will be redetermined for the third round and quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals will be re-seeded as well.

All kickoffs for the opening rounds are scheduled for 7 p.m.
