Big night for Matson not enough

SPENCER — The season came to an end for Humboldt here Friday night, as the Wildcats fell in a thriller to Spencer, 42-35.

Humboldt put together a fourth quarter rally, scoring 16 points, but it was not enough.

Caden Matson finished 12-for-23 passing for 195 yards with three touchdowns, adding another 136 yards and two scores on the ground. The junior finished the year with 14 passing TDs, 18 rushing touchdowns with 1,515 yards passing and 1,068 yards rushing.

Jacob Heier had four catches for 107 yards and a score, with Gabe Gidel adding three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The two teams were tied at 6-all after the first with the Tigers (6-2 overall) taking a 13-12 lead at halftime. Spencer outscored Humboldt (5-4) in the third, 14-7, to seize control of the game.
