Indians, Mustangs play for state berths

Pocahontas Area has won two straight district championships and is looking to punch a state tournament bid this time around.

The 10th-ranked Indians (16-1 overall), who have won 10 straight games, will face third-ranked Dike-New Hartford (14-3) in a Class 2A substate final at West Fork, Sheffield.

Newell-Fonda (16-2) will give the Twin Lakes Conference another hope for a state berth, as the Mustangs will meet second-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s (18-0) in a 1A substate final.

Both games are slated to begin at 7 p.m.

For the Indians, Christian Davidson has been the guiding force of the pitching staff. Davidson is 6-0 on the season with a 0.34 ERA. He has given up only two earned runs in 41 innings pitched. He has 61 strikeouts and six walks.

Gavin Ehn is also unbeaten with a 4-0 mark. Ehn has a 1.14 ERA in 24 innings on the mound. He has 23 strikeouts.

Sophomore Chase Cook is the Indians’ leading hitter with a .423 average and 15 RBI. He has 22 hits. Davidson leads the team in hits with 25 and 11 RBI with a .417 average.

Senior Thomas Melohn (14), junior Trey Oehlertz (12), Ehn (11) and sophomore Tyce Ruffridge (10) have driven in double digit runs.

The Wolverines boast a pitching staff with a team ERA of 1.85. They have only given up 29 earned runs in 110 innings of work.

At the dish senior Drew Sonnernberg has driven in 19 runs, while senior Reece Beuter (18) and junior Zak Wauters (16) are right behind.

For Newell-Fonda, junior Hogan Henrich has compiled a 6-1 record with a 1.34 ERA. He has 40 strikeouts in 31• innings pitched. Junior Tanner Gerge has thrown 25ª innings and carries a 1.91 ERA with 42 strikeouts.

At the plate junior Gabe Sievers is batting .429 with a team high 26 RBI and 24 hits.

Freshman Mason Dicks (18), sophomore Trey Jungers (17), senior Aden Mahler (15), freshman Ryan Greenfield (14) and Henrich (13) lead the team in RBI.

Junior Blaine Harpenau (6-0) is the top pitcher for the Hawks, throwing 37• innings. He has a 0.19 ERA with 79 strikeouts.

Freshman Jaxon Bunkers (18), junior Jeremy Koenck (17), and junior Xavier Gallas (16) lead the team in runs driven in.
