The Fort Dodge baseball team got a sneak peek of what they will see when the postseason opens on Friday night against Ames.

The Dodgers (11-9 overall) dropped a doubleheader to the Little Cyclones (13-7) on Monday night at Ed McNeil Field. Ames won the first contest, 6-4, and then closed out the twinbill with a 15-3 victory in six innings.

In the opener, the Dodgers showed signs of power, with three players hitting their first career home runs. Junior Tyler Schreier hit his first leading off the contest to tie the game at 1-1.

With the Dodgers trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Carson Peterson knotted the score with his first varsity longball to tie the contest at 2-2.

The game would eventually go to extra innings. Ames grabbed a 6-2 lead after four runs in the top half of the eighth. Dodger sophomore Eli Elsbecker cleared the fence for the first time, driving in Peterson to bring the final to 6-4.

“We swung the bats pretty decent (in the first game),” said FDSH head coach Blake Utley. “Tyler Schreier led off with a homer, which was great. But we dug ourselves too big of a hole and were playing from behind all night. They took advantage of the situations we gave them.”

Senior Nick Bice, sophomore Jace Ulrich and junior Sawyer Springer also had hits for FDSH, which has now dropped four in a row after winning 11 of 13.

In the nightcap, Bice had two hits for the Dodgers and drove in a run. Senior Mason Bockoven drove in a run, as did Peterson. Schreier had a triple for the Dodgers.

“We have to focus the rest of this week and and take care of Dodger baseball,” Utley said. “The good thing is, you get a lot of information on them, and they get some on you, too.

“We just have to work on situations and execute the game we know we can play. These games have no effect on what happens (Friday).”

Fort Dodge faces Carroll at 7:30 p.m. on the road to conclude the regular season on Tuesday.

The Dodgers open Class 4A, Substate 1 play on Friday at Ed McNeil Field versus the Little Cyclones. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
