No. 8 Indians hand Gaels first defeat

POCAHONTAS — Gavin Ehn tossed a one-hitter for eighth-ranked (Class 2A) Pocahontas Area on Tuesday night to hand the St. Edmond baseball team its first loss of the season.

The Indians (5-0 overall) used nine hits to top the Gaels (3-1) by a final score of 4-0.

“They put the bat on the ball and we didn’t,” said SEHS head coach Mike Szalat. “They also made a lot of plays in the field and we weren’t able to.”

Ehn had 10 strikeouts and was solid at the plate with two hits. Chase Cook recorded three hits for Pocahontas Area.

Grant Heldorfer (1-1) suffered the loss for the Gaels. Jed Tracy recorded the only hit for St. Edmond.

“Grant wasn’t getting ahead and was pitching from behind all night,” Szalat said. “We didn’t help him at all with six errors in the field. We kept putting him in tough situations.

“It was encouraging to see him not give up.”

The Gaels are back in action on Wednesday at Rogers Park against Algona. Action begins at 5:30 p.m. with junior varsity. Varsity will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
