Gael rally falls short

The St. Edmond baseball team put together a late rally, but couldn’t overcome a six-run deficit in falling to Hampton-Dumont 10-8 on Friday during Senior Night at Rogers Park.

The Gaels (4-3 overall, 1-2 North Central Conference) gave the Bulldogs’ a slew of unearned opportunties with six errors, which led to six unearned runs.

“We had too many defensive mistakes,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “That really hurt us us. We gave them a ton of extra at-bats.

“That was the story of the game.”

H-D/C led 10-4 through six. The Gaels plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within a pair of runs, but couldn’t quite get over the hump.

Freshman catcher John Nemmers had two hits for the Gaels and drove in three. Peyton Scott drove in two. Tracy, Carlson and Cael Kolacia had an RBI each.

St. Edmond’s two seniors, Jed Tracy and Noah Carlson, were honored for their contributions to the program.

“We played four nights in a row,” Szalat said. “Less is more in my book, so I think we got a little worn down. We need them ready physically and mentally down the stretch.

“We’re still inexperienced, so the extra practice time is important.”

The Gaels are back in action on Monday when they travel to face Webster City in a North Central Conference contest. Junior varsity action begins at 5:30 p.m. with varsity to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
