Tritons sweep Madison in baseball

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Central baseball team was supposed to hit the road to Tennessee for an extended trip, but weather scrapped those plans.

Instead, the Tritons faced off with Madison College here at Mount Mercy University, scoring a sweep.

Iowa Central claimed the opener, 4-3, in 12 innings and won the nightcap, 3-2.

Jeff Lamp had a walk-off RBI single in the 12th to secure the win, as Jayden Maifeld and Nolan Johnson combined to record 12 strikeouts in 10 innings on the mound without allowing an earned run.

Walter Long pitched the final two innings for the victory, striking out three.

Devin Hurdle collected three hits, scored twice and drove in another run for the Tritons (4-1 overall). Nate Mortimer, Ryan Wickman, Ryan Doran and Eduardo Noguera all had two hits each, with Mortimer and Wickman stealing two bases each.

Brenden Roder went five innings in the second game, striking out four. Former Pocahontas Area all-stater Jace Davidson earned his first college win by striking out three over three innings.

Mortimer had two hits and two runs with Doran driving in the game-tying run with a triple in the seventh.

The Tritons head to Minneapolis and U.S. Bank Stadium on Wednesday to face Bryant & Stratton College at 10 p.m.
