Top honors for Joyce siblings

ALGONA — John Joyce knows that opposing teams are never going to take it easy on his sister, Molly Joyce.

And that is why John makes sure to play the role of tough big brother.

The Bishop Garrigan standouts were each named to the all-Top of Iowa West division first team for their efforts on the hardwood this season.

Joining John Joyce on the boys first team was Angelo Winkel, with Marcus Plathe and Cade Winkel making second, and Andrew Arndorfer honorable mention.

For the girls, Audi Crooks was first team and the runner-up in the player of the year voting with Kaylyn Meyers second and Madison Meister honorable mention.

John Joyce, a senior, who is headed to Coe College in the fall to continue his career, averaged over 13 points and led the Golden Bears in assists and steals.

“It is very special that (Molly) and I can share the same accomplishment,” he said. “Seeing her have that much success this early in her career is great. We are pretty competitive against each other, so I guess neither of us have bragging rights on this one.”

Bishop Garrigan won the outright league title for the first time in school history this winter, adding a previously won North Central Conference championship.

“Making first team all-conference was a personal goal of mine,” he said. “It’s always cool to see the work you put in during the offseason translate to the court during the season.

“Playing for this coaching staff this year has been a lot of fun and playing with these teammates has been special.”

Molly Joyce also helped the Golden Bears win league gold, sharing the title with West Hancock. A freshman, she is averaging 18 points and leads BGHS in made 3-pointers and steals.

“It’s special, and probably pretty rare, to be first team in the same year as my brother,” she said. “He’s having a great season and he’s a really good player.

“Making first team all-conference is a big honor and I’m very thankful to have great teammates that support me and allow me to play the way I do.”

North Union’s Chloe Lofstrom made the first team with Hope Steinberger and Robert Ortman honorable mention.
