Iowa Central women can’t slow Kirkwood

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Iowa Central women concluded their regular season here Saturday afternoon, falling to fourth-ranked Kirkwood, 66-40.

The Eagles (27-3 overall, 14-2 in ICCAC) raced out to a commanding 19-3 after the first quarter and never looked back, finishing the month 7-1 with the lone loss coming to No. 1 North Iowa Area, which clinched the league title.

For the Tritons (17-13, 8-8), Isabell West scored 13 points with 10 rebounds. Jordan Engbrecht added 10 points and Anni Cummings had six.

Iowa Central played Kirkwood closer after the first, getting outscored by just four in the second quarter, two in the third and four in the fourth.

In that opening 10 minutes, the Eagles hit 8 of 16 shots from the field including three 3-pointers as Paige Bradford scored eight. The Tritons were 1-of-17 as Aaliyah Hull scored all three points.

Next up for Iowa Central will be the start of the Region XI Tournament on Wednesday. The Tritons will be the No. 6 seed, heading to Keokuk to face Southeastern (18-12, 9-7) at 5:30 p.m.

The winner between Iowa Central and Southeastern faces either Kirkwood or Des Moines Area next Saturday, with the finals scheduled for next Sunday.
