Goodman state tradition continues

Joey is the sixth from the family to reach the big stage

DES MOINES — The Goodman name represents basketball royalty in the state of Iowa.

Joe Goodman is extending the family tradition at the boys tournament this week.

Goodman, a senior guard for Iowa City West, will take the court in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday morning as the third-seeded Trojans (21-2 overall) face Ankeny (18-5) at 10:30 a.m. inside Wells Fargo Arena.

This marks back-to-back appearances for Goodman and West. Joey’s relatives know the state trip like the back of their hand, following a lineage that dates back to the 1920s.

Joe’s father, Jay, was an all-state guard on Fort Dodge Senior High’s 1988 championship squad. And Jay’s brother, the late Tommy John Goodman, was a standout for the 1983 Sioux City North Stars, who placed third that season.

“It’s been a great year following Joey and West High,” said Jay, also a former Utah State Aggie standout. “They really play well as a team and like each other. It’s a great group of kids. Joey really enjoyed his role as a leader, and likes to make everyone around him better. He has great court vision and prides himself on his defense.

“He’s not real big (at 5-foot-11), like all the Goodmans, but knows what he can and can’t do out there.”

Jay and Tommy’s father, Tom Goodman, is a Dodger legend. The two-time first team all-stater reached state with Fort Dodge as a player in 1964 and as a coach for the ’88 title team — the school’s only boys basketball championship.

Tom Goodman, currently an assistant at Bondurant Farrar, also helped guide schools to state as a coach in 1973, 1975, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 2002 and 2014.

The state track record extends back to Tom’s father, W.A. Conrad “Connie” Goodman, a long-time Dodger coach himself who led three teams to the tournament in Des Moines. And Connie’s sister, Marie, played in the first-ever girls state tournament 100 years ago — in 1920 — for eventual champion Correctionville.

“I think Joey has a real sense of pride in coming from a basketball family, and he takes (that responsibility) seriously,” Jay said. “I really love watching him play. I wish it didn’t have to end. Like I told him (Tuesday), even if it ended today, I couldn’t be more proud.

“The state tournament is not a place to hide; a lot of great players and teams never get there. So I want him to go out there and show what he can do. I know Joey and the whole West team feels like they are ready to play.”

Joe Goodman starts for West, averaging 4.1 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. He leads the Trojans in assists (95) and steals (32).

Connie and Tom are both in the Iowa High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Tom, Jay and Tommy have been inducted into the players’ wing.

Joe is also the grandson of Fort Dodge’s Tom and Joan Tibbitts. His mother, Jill, is an FDSH graduate as well.
