Five more Top-3s for Triton swimmers

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The Iowa Central swim team team brought home five top-three finishes from the NJCAA national championships on Friday.

Billy Cruz added a silver medal to his two gold medals, with a runner up showing in the 100 breaststroke. Cruz touched the wall in 54.97, just behind the winning time of 54.31.

“Billy getting two firsts and a second is nice to see,” said Iowa Central head coach Joe Plane. “He didn’t win the 100 breaststroke, but he’s ready to come back strong.”

Cruz was also part of the 200 medley relay team, who just missed out on victory. He swam the third leg that finished in 1:31.11. Barton was the winner in 1:31.04 and Southwest Oregon was 1:31.06. Joining Cruz was John Gill, Emile Lutzeler and Vincent Fletcher was on the final leg.

“The boys stepped it up, recording a school record,” Plane said. “They did swim their best time and just came up short.”

Marcelo Busch earned bronze in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:33.99. Vinicius Molz (4:46.55) was seventh and Andrew Iverson (4:53.10) eighth.

Lutzeler and Fletcher went fifth and sixth in the 100 IM in times of 42.40 and 53.44 respectively.

Five Tritons earned points in the 100 backstroke. Mariano Sosa (51.66) was sixth and Tjeerd Van Stein (53.12) was eighth. Dalton Hammel (1:58.04) was seventh in the 200 butterfly.

The men are currently in third place behind Indian Rivers and Barton.

Emilie Andrin earned a bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:05.51 for a new school record.

Eve Berg also set a school record with a seventh place showing in the 500 freestyle (5:14.77).

Paula Ronda earned a fourth place in the 200 butterfly (2:13.23) and Mary Marshall (2:13.43) was fifth.

The 200 medley relay team of Beals, Magali Mouton, Ronda and Andrin were fourth in 1:52.88. Maria Diaz (1:03.38) was fifth in the 100 IM and Magali Mouton (1:07.12) was fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Beals was seventh in the 100 IM (1:03.90).

The Triton women are in fourth place.

“All seven of our women swimmers were in the Top-8,” Plane said. “It shows that we may lack in numbers, but we make up for it in strength.”
