Golden Bears return with unfinished business in mind

DES MOINES — Cade Winkel has heard it all before.

Now, the Bishop Garrigan senior knows it is up to himself and his teammates to make history.

The second-seeded Golden Bears (22-2 overall) take on Springville (20-5) at 1 p.m. in the boys state basketball quarterfinals inside Wells Fargo Arena on Monday.

“At Garrigan, a lot of people say, ‘that’s just our luck,'” Winkel said. “Well, I don’t want another ‘what if’ or ‘if only this’ class. I want our class to be remembered as the class ‘that did.’

“We have a great shot at winning it all, and win or lose, if we put in maximum effort, that’s all you can really ask for.”

Bishop Garrigan reached the elite eight last year, bowing out to fellow returning qualifier Montezuma.

Winkel, fellow senior John Joyce, and junior brother Angelo Winkel are all returning starters from that squad. The Golden Bears have gone 60-14 over the past three seasons, including winning the program’s first-ever Top of Iowa Conference title this winter for the program.

“It means a lot to make it back to state as a senior,” Winkel said. “Being one of the leaders of a state team and just trying to set good examples for the underclassmen to show them what they need to do to succeed is really important.”

Earlier this year, the Golden Bears hit the road to face Mason City Newman. Following two convincing wins to being the season, they were feeling good about themselves and their chances.

Despite all of that, there was still something to show on the court.

“I knew (Newman) had lost quite a few players from last year and they were missing a couple freshmen who were good, and BCMoore had us winning by like 25,” Winkel recalled. “I remember telling one of our assistant coaches, Roger Froehlich, that. He told me that the game was going to be way closer and we needed to prove ourselves before making claims.

“Well, we ended up winning by almost 50 points. I think after that game, we all realized we had something special brewing here.”

Seniors Andrew Arndorfer and Marcus Plathe have emerged as key contributors alongside senior Cameron Baade and junior Kyle Schaaf. Together, the group averages 72.6 points per contest, shooting almost 53 percent from the field and 35 percent from the 3-point line.

Angelo Winkel, who is fielding several college offers, leads the way at 19 points and almost 10 rebounds a night, with Cade Winkel adding 16 points, 153 boards, 71 assists, 25 steals and 18 blocks. Joyce posts 14 points and leads the team with 84 assists and 33 steals.

Cade Winkel is headed to Briar Cliff University, Joyce to Coe College, and Arndorfer to Briar Cliff to golf in the fall.

Awaiting the winner between Garrigan and Springville will be either Remsen St. Mary’s (22-3) or fellow league member West Fork (23-2) on Wednesday in the semifinals. A third TOIC school, Lake Mills, also reached the 1A tourney and is on the other side of the bracket.
