The awards have piled up for the Newell-Fonda girls this winter, as the Mustangs claimed a second consecutive Class 1A state title.

Along the way, they also won another Twin Lakes Conference crown, placed three players on the first team and had the league coach of the year in Dick Jungers.

Making the first team were juniors Ella Larsen and Maggie Walker, along with sophomore Macy Sievers. Emmetsburg’s Molly Schany and Pocahontas Area’s Kaylee Shivers were also on the squad.

Newell-Fonda completed a perfect season by downing Bishop Garrigan for the title. They were 11-0 in TLC games, finishing ahead of Emmetsburg, Pocahontas Area, Sioux Central and South Central Calhoun.

Walker led the team in scoring in the conference at 14.6 per game. Sievers posted 13.5 and Larsen just over 10. Sievers led the league in assists and Larsen tied for the lead in steals.

Schany finished second in scoring, shooting 54.5 percent from the field and was third in rebounding. Shivers led the conference with 92 total rebounds, was third in blocks and psoted just under 14 points a night.

Making the second team from Newell-Fonda were Megan Morenz and Bailey Sievers, with Emmetsburg’s Abbie Schany, Pocahontas Area’s Akaysa Duitscher, East Sac County’s Maty Quirk and South Central Calhoun’s Riley Batta and Brielle Korleski joining them.
