Wildcats punch state ticket

ATLANTIC — When Humboldt needed a big win, it was Colton Goddell who provided the heroics.

With their Class 2A regional dual final match against Atlantic-CAM tied at 29, Goodell was the only wrestler left for the Wildcats.

Goodell earned a fall in 5:43 over Noah Vandevanter to give Humboldt a 34-29 victory and a berth in the state dual tournament.

“We have to temper him down a little bit sometimes, but he’s one of the guys you want in that spot,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “He gets a little jazzed up, because he’s a tough competitor.”

Humboldt trailed 29-20 with three matches to go. Logan Nilles earned a tech fall at 182, and Walt Delanoit had a decision at 195 to set up the final match for Goodell.

Cole Nelson (106), Cresten Craven (120), Joe Weydert (145) and Levi Naeve (160) all earned victories for Humboldt.

“It wasn’t the prettiest that we wrestled,” Beaman said. “They were favored in a couple of those matches and we just finished strong.

“I’m just very proud of our kids and their effort.”

In the semifinals, Humboldt beat Van Meter, 45-30.

Goodell (220), Nelson, Jase Goodell (113), Craven, Colby Clarken (132), Jordan Jensen (138), Naeve and Nilles earned victories for Humboldt in the semifinal match.

“We had some big wins against Atltantic,” Beaman said. “We had some kids fight. Ty Gargano sucked his weight down and we had him go down to 126.

“We had great effort all the way through.”
