South Central Calhoun boys bow out
CHEROKEE — The South Central Calhoun boys were denied a trip to the Class 2A state tournament, falling here Saturday night to West Sioux, 63-48.
The Falcons, led by Iowa State University recruit Hunter Dekkers, pulled away in the fourth to clinch the substate title.
For the Titans (19-5 overall), Landon Schleisman scored 17 points with Zane Neubaum adding 12.
Dekkers scored a game-high 30 points for West Sioux, with Kade Lynott adding 11.
The Falcons (22-2) led by 14 at the break thanks in large part to seven made 3-pointers. That advantage, though, was cut down to four late in the third on a bucket by Schleisman to make it 44-40.
From there, West Sioux — led by Dekkers and former Newell-Fonda standout Bryce Coppock — took over, outscoring the Titans 19-8 despite missing seven consecutive free throws during one stretch of the fourth.
The game marked the final contest in a South Central Calhoun uniform for Schleisman, Neubaum, Josh Henkenius, Chase Scheidegger, Ben Ludwig and Jacob Schultz.
