Iowa Central’s Grady named AOW

Lea Grady was recently named one of eight National Athletes of the Week by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The sophomore from Davenport dominated at the Region XI Championships, helping the Tritons claim a 15th consecutive team title.

With her throw of 51-9 in the shot put, Grady defended her regional title in earning gold. She also mosted up to eighth on the NJCAA all-time list with the toss.

“Lea competed extremely weel this past weekend,” ICCC head coach Jordan Burkholder said. “She not only won the shot put title with a toss of 51-9, but that mark also set a new regional record.”

Any of her five legal marks in the event would have won the title, as she was nine feet ahead of the runner-up.

Completing the weekend double, Grady won the weight throw with a toss of 61-9. That was eight feet ahead of the runner-up and also another regional record.

“This was a great meet for her as we prepare for nationals next week,” said Burkholder, who also doubles as the throws coach for the Tritons.

Grady is the first female field event athlete from Iowa Central to be named national athlete of the week during the indoor season. She was named the Regional Field Athlete of the Year as a freshman.

The NJCAA National Indoor Championships take place March 6-7 in Liberty, Va.
