ALGONA — The St. Edmond boys took care of business here Thursday night, downing Graettinger-Terril/R-A in a Class 1A, District 2 quarterfinal, 61-31.

Drew Schaeffer scored 16 points with Quinten McCarville adding 10. Both Hayden Mayer and Jerris Duncan chipped in eight each.

The Gaels (8-13 overall) will now get a rematch with Bishop Garrigan back here on Tuesday night. The Golden Bears downed Storm Lake St. Mary’s, 83-37.

“We did a good job of getting a lot of touches on offense,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We got everybody involved in the offense and it was good to get a nice lead at the half.

“In the third, we came out and kept the foot on the gas.”

Anthony Lacina and Connor Bocken added six points with four others also getting in the scoring column.

Schaeffer, McCarville, Mayer and Lacina are all underclassmen, while Duncan and Bocken are seniors.

“The younger kids are starting to understand that if they do the fundamental things right, they are going to get more playing time,” Kochendorfer said. “Quinten did a nice job of getting to the free throw line in the first half by getting into the lane.”

Since a five-game losing skid that included four road losses, St. Edmond has won four of five.

For the Titans (6-14), they end the year having lost five in a row and seven of their last eight. Freshman Max Hough led them in scoring with 11, while classmate Drew Schnell added six.

Back in early December, Bishop Garrigan posted a 66-35 victory over the Gaels. Bocken scored 15 for SEHS to lead the way.

“They are a big, physical team,” Kochendorfer said of the Golden Bears, who reached the state tournament last year with a win over St. Edmond in a district final.

In the other district semifinal, Newell-Fonda takes on Harris-Lake Park. The Mustangs advanced with a 76-23 victory over Paton-Churdan, while Harris-Lake Park downed Glidden-Ralston, 65-46.

That game will tip at 6:30 p.m. with St. Edmond and Bishop Garrigan to follow at 8 p.m. Those two winners meet on Feb. 27 in Pocahontas for a district title.
