Class 1A, 2A district wrestling set for Saturday

Blake McAlister battled through sectionals and districts to reach the state wrestling tournament a year ago as a freshman.

Now, South Central Calhoun’s sixth-ranked 160-pounder is using all of that experience to his advantage in hopes of securing another spot in the Class 1A field.

McAlister and three of his Titan teammates will take part Saturday in a district meet at Mapleton hosted by MVAOCOU.

Joining McAlister will be sophomore Kevin King, junior Jordan Khommanyvong and senior Brian King. All four won sectional titles last weekend in Moville.

“Coming out of sectionals definitely feels good,” said McAlister, who is 42-3 overall this year. “And having three other buddies with me is just like icing on the cake.”

Kevin King is 41-4 and competes at 113 pounds, Khommanyvong is 32-3 and ranked seventh at 138 and Brian King is 40-8 at 220. The three also advanced to districts last season.

Last year, McAlister qualified for state alongside his brother, Chase, a current member of the Iowa State University track team. Blake McAlister finished his season with a record of 35-11, including a pair of matches at state.

“After being to this point last season, I’m going into this weekend viewing it just like any other meet,” McAlister said. “This is just another step along the way.

“I have my ultimate goal this season, and to reach that, I have to stay focused and do my thing this weekend.”

Brian King went over the 100-win mark this year and enters districts with 128 victories. Khommanyvong is 92-19 in his career with Kevin King sitting at 77-15.

The rest of the 1A area qualifiers will compete in Sioux Rapids, as Clarion-Goldfield/Dows sends eight, Manson Northwest Webster brings seven and Eagle Grove enters five.

Pocahontas Area (four), East Sac County (three), West Bend-Mallard (three) and North Union (two) also have qualifiers.

In 2A, Emmetsburg (eighth), Humboldt (seven), Webster City (five), Algona (five), Greene County (four) and Southeast Valley (two) travel to Algona for a district meet.

A handful of returning state placewinners will seek another bid including Webster City’s Camron Phetxoumphone. The unbeaten 106-pounder placed fifth last year.

Clarion-Goldfield/Dows’ Remington Hanson finished seventh, Eagle Grove’s Gabe Rolon was seventh and teammate Joel Mendoza was fifth, and Emmetsburg’s Mason Griffin earned sixth place honors.
