Tritons take Top-10 matchup

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The ninth-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team picked up a 22-16 victory over No. 4 Iowa Western here Thursday night in ICCAC action.

Earning Triton wins were Daniel Vargas, Boone McDermott, Ja’Quez Bostic, Anthony Johnson, Ashton Eyler, Andrew Gamble and Nolan Miller-Johnston.

McDermott and Vargas scored a major decision and decision, respectively, in the final two matches to seal the dual for Iowa Central. Both McDermott and Vargas are ranked for the Tritons.

“I was a little worried because we gave up some bonus points in early matches,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “But we pulled out a few close ones and won a swing match at 165.”

Eyler knocked off the top-ranked competitor at 165 pounds in Isaiah Crosby, 10-4. Miller-Johnston also topped a rated wrestler, downing No. 5 Melvin Hernandez.

“I told Ashton before the match, ‘this doesn’t have to be a close match if you don’t want it to be,'” Moffitt said. “It’s all about having the right mentality. He pretty much dominated (Crosby).”

Last weekend, the Reivers were second at the NJCAA Coaches Duals, while Iowa Central placed fifth.

The Tritons are at Ellsworth on Wednesday.
