Rockets too much for Gael girls

PATON — Paton-Churdan’s Danielle Hoyle was just too much for the St. Edmond girls basketball team to handle on Monday.

The 6-foot-2 junior scored 29 points as the Rockets (8-6 overall) rolled to a 57-36 victory over the Gaels (0-13).

“She (Hoyle) was strong underneath,” said St. Edmond head coach Steve Neuberger. “She is listed as 6-2 and is the real deal. Her teammates did a nice job of getting here the ball.

“When we did collapse on her, they threw it out and hit some threes.”

The Rockets burst out of the gate, building a 26-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and earning a 24-point lead by halftime.

Leah Neverman turned in a double-digit effort, scoring 12 points. Aubrey Bemrich had seven points for the Dodgers.

“We gave up 26 points in the first quarter and that’s a big hole to dig out of,” Neuberger said. “Leah was working real hard. She knocked down a three to start to the second half and had some nice offensive putbacks. She was active going against Hoyle.”

The Gaels are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Algona.
