Lynx handle SE girls

The St. Edmond girls played the kind of defense head coach Steve Neuberger can appreciate here Friday night.

Now, he just needs to see the offense come together.

The Gaels held Webster City’s Taylor McKinney scoreless through the second half, but were unable to ever fight out of a big deficit, falling 39-15.

McKinney, the career scoring leader for the Lynx (8-6 overall, 5-4 in North Central Conference), had a game-high 11 points — all of it coming in the opening 16 minutes.

“I was just so proud of our defensive effort,” Neuberger said. “We knew if we took McKinney away and tried to do the same to (Grace) Hoversten, we could force someone else to beat us.”

As the Gaels (0-12, 0-8) have done in the past few years, they put cross country standout Aubrey Bemrich on McKinney. Previously, fellow distance runner Abby Landwehr was used to bother the talented senior.

“Aubrey did a great job,” Neuberger said. “She also has some height and that played a factor. Gracie Harvey was excellent in helping to force McKinney to get rid of the ball.

“It’s really nice to have great athletes that excel in other sports like cross country play basketball and use their abilities on the court.”

The Lynx received 14 points off the bench from Jenna Miller and Leah Kasch. Miller scored eight with five rebounds. Adalie Schwandt had 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Leading the way for St. Edmond was Leah Neverman, as the junior scored seven points with four rebounds. Cambrie McBride added six points, four boards and two steals.

The Gaels are set to play five straight on the road starting Monday at Paton-Churdan. Webster City hosts Clear Lake on Tuesday.
