Fort Dodge’s Teske decides to transfer

Four-time Dodger state champ leaves Penn State

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla Fort Dodge's Brody Teske reacts after winning his fourth consecutive state championship during his senior year in 2018.

Brody Teske is on the move, as the four-time Fort Dodge Senior High state champion confirmed on Wednesday that he has left Penn State University.

Teske, a redshirt freshman 125-pounder for the Nittany Lions, will enter the transfer portal and could potentially be eligible to compete for a program next season. He said there is no timetable on his decision, nor a specific list of schools he is officially considering at the moment.

Teske, the Dodgers’ all-time winningest wrestler with a career prep record of 177-1, posted a 5-2 record for fourth-ranked Penn State this year. He was 6-2 as an unattached competitor in open tournaments last winter.

The 2018 FDSH graduate committed to Iowa State University legend and PSU head coach Cael Sanderson in the fall of 2017. He captured his fourth state title in as many years the following spring, helping the Dodgers secure a team championship for the first time since 1985 in the process.

Three of Teske’s high school teammates — redshirt sophomore Triston Lara and redshirt freshmen Cayd Lara and Drew Bennett — are currently members of the University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad. A fourth, Sam Cook, is a redshirt junior at the University of Iowa.

Drake Ayala, who was a freshman state runner-up for the Dodgers during Teske’s senior year, is now the nation’s top-ranked 120-pounder in his class and will be the fourth Div. Ayala announced recently he has narrowed his list of colleges down to Iowa, Iowa State, Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina, Minnesota and Northern Iowa.

Sanderson first announced Teske’s decision to leave on Wednesday during his weekly coaches radio show. The program also confirmed that Adam Busiello, a former Arizona State wrestler who had committed to Penn State originally, joined the Nittany Lions’ squad and will likely compete at either 125 or 133 pounds. Busiello is a four-time New York state champion who flipped from PSU to ASU during his senior year at Eastport-South Manor High School.

Teske, the son of former Dodger state placewinner Dan and Wendy Teske of Duncombe, was the 2018 Iowa Dan Gable Wrestler of the Year, and the 2018 FDSH Schultz Award winner. His only high school loss was to fellow four-time state champ Alex Thomsen of Underwood, who is currently a redshirt freshman at the University of Nebraska.

Teske was a consensus Top-10 recruit at his weight while at Fort Dodge under head coach Bobby Thompson. He originally picked the Nittany Lions — the nine-time defending NCAA champions — over Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Minnesota.
