Dodgers host CIML Iowa swim meet

The Fort Dodge swim team got a chance to test itself against some of the best in the state here inside the Dodger pool Saturday as they hosted the CIML Iowa Conference meet.

Waukee racked up 508 points to take home team honors followed by West Des Moines Valley, Marshalltown, Mason City, Southeast Polk and Fort Dodge.

The Dodgers had nine Top-20 finishes, led by Kevin O’Connor’s 10th in the 500 freestyle.

O’Connor completed the distance race in 5:52.05, a season-best time for the freshman. He was also 19th in the 200 freestyle in 2:10.01, posting another best time.

Austin Jorgensen finished 14th in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.47 with teammate Gage Riley right behind in 15th with a time of 2:30.15.

Demetri Grantham placed 15th in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.65, Colby Doebel was 16th in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.28 and Riley finished 19th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.97.

Riley’s times in both of his races were top marks on the year as was Doebel’s swim in the backstroke.

Doebel, O’Connor, Jake Miller and Jorgensen went a season-best 4:03.83 to finish 15th in the 400 free relay with Jorgensen, Riley, Grantham and Braydon Smith going 2:03.37 for 16th in the 200 medley relay.

Waukee is ranked second in the overall power rankings with Valley ninth and Marshalltown 13th in the state.

Fort Dodge will be a host site this coming Saturday for a district qualifier beginning at noon. Joining the Dodgers will be Ames, Boone, Carroll Community, Sioux City West, Spencer, Storm Lake and Waukee.

The state swim meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 15 in Iowa City.
