The Fort Dodge girls put themselves in position to upend rival Mason City here Monday night through the first eight minutes.

But a disastrous second quarter wiped that away.

The 12th-ranked (Class 4A) Mohawks used a 26-8 run in that period on their way to posting a 59-47 win.

Over the final 16 minutes, Fort Dodge (4-11 overall, 2-5 in CIML Iowa Conference) actually outscored Mason City (9-7, 3-4), but they could never get closer than the final score.

“We came out and did a lot of really good things,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “But in that second quarter, we just let them do whatever they wanted. Our ball movement got slow, our spacing was bad and we didn’t defend.”

Tory Bennett and Aleaha Pommer both scored 12 points, with Bennett also grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds before leaving the game late with an ankle injury.

Cheyenne Miller-Hameed gave the Dodgers a third player in double figures with 10. Both Pommer and Miller-Hammed had six rebounds.

“Tory just continues to be someone we can run our offense through,” Messerly said. “Aleaha and Cheyenne came on there in the second half and helped lead our efforts.”

Pommer and Miller-Hameed combined for 19 points over the final 16 minutes.

For the Mohawks, Anna Deets scored 17, Jaeda Whitner added 14 and Ali Rood had 10. Jada Williams scored nine points with eight rebounds and four steals.

“We’ve just got to keep from putting ourselves in bad positions like that second quarter,” Messerly said. “Other than that, we were right there with them. The girls have been working hard and you can see that on the court.”

Jalen Adams added eight points and three rebounds off the bench, with Tristin Doster recording five rebounds and two steals.

Fort Dodge returns to action on Friday when they host sixth-ranked (5A) Southeast Polk. The Rams won the first meeting of the year between the two, 75-32.
