The St. Edmond football team experienced a serious case of deja vu here Friday night inside a chilly Dodger Stadium.

For the second consecutive season, Ridge View earned its first victory of the year over the Gaels, this time by a 21-14 final.

The Raptors (1-6 overall, 1-2 in Class A, District 2) started a three-game win streak to end 2018 with a 26-0 triumph in Holstein. They have now won four in a row in the series with St. Edmond (2-5, 0-3).

Despite five turnovers and two drives that stalled out deep inside Ridge View territory, the Gaels still had a chance to tie it in the final moments.

Drew Schaeffer’s pass towards the end zone as time expired, though, came up short, sending St. Edmond to its fourth consecutive loss.

“It’s just frustrating,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “We were some 70 miles west at this point last year and the same thing happened with them getting their first win against us.

“At this point, I just don’t really know what to say. As coaches, we have to take the blame for this. We have to do a better job of getting the kids prepared and ready to go.”

Schaeffer, who threw for a career-high 242 yards last week, was 12-for-36 for 131 yards with passing touchdowns to Parker Oswald and Kase Baker. Oswald finished with four catches for 47 yards and Baker had five for 60 and also picked off a pass.

Sean Flattery ran for 70 yards and added an interception on defense.

“Our defense kept us in it again just like they have much of the season,” Dillon said. “We had our chances. We had the ball at the (Ridge View) 3-yard line, thought we scored and then had a flag. We had another drive we came away empty on.

“Those are just things you cannot do and expect to win games at any level.”

Ridge View held a 151-87 edge in rushing yards and also recovered two fumbles before they could fall into St. Edmond hands.

Colton Dutler put the Raptors on the board with a 15-yard touchdown run in the first and Jared Vohs returned an interception 34 yards 53 seconds later to make it 14-0.

Brody Deitering had the game-winning score on a 2-yard run midway through the third. Dylan Wood, Zander Ernst, Dutler and Deitering combined to run for 157 yards.

“Give Ridge View credit because they came here and did the exact same thing they did to us last year at their place,” Dillon said. “We just couldn’t get out of our own way.”

After punting the ball back to the Raptors with just under four to go in the game, the Gael defense recorded a turnover on downs to give the offense one final chance.

Schaeffer hit Oswald and Baker twice each, placing the ball on the Ridge View 17 with six seconds left. Two attempts to tie it came up empty, though, for St. Edmond.

The Gaels played their final home game of the season, honoring seniors Charlie Shelly, Jackson Bemrich, Matthew McCrady, Bryce Andersen, Bennett McCarville, Nick Lawler and Ethan Lursen prior to kickoff.

Next action for St. Edmond will be at Alta/Aurelia, followed by the senior final at Manson Northwest Webster.
