Tritons 3rd at Hawkeye Invite

IOWA CITY — The Iowa Central cross country teams finished third in both the men’s and women’s team standings at the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa.

Iowa swept both team titles, with Drake second on the men’s side and Iowa State runners-up on the women’s.

For the Triton women, Winrose Chesang was the individual runner-up, finishing in 14:05. Eleonora Curtabbi was third and Florance Uwajeneza placed seventh. The three ran the second, third and fourth fastest times in school history.

“We have an exceptional women’s team this year,” said Dee Brown, the director of cross country at Iowa Central. “We aren’t quite at full strength yet. We are blessed to have some talented front-runners. Winrose challenged for the lead late in the race.”

Iowa’s Abby Caldwell was the winner in 14:02.

Awet Yohannes finished third to lead the Iowa Central men, with Drake’s Adam Fogg winning the individual title. Yohannes had a time of 18:18.

Yiech Pur Biel was 21st and Eldad Mulugeta 23rd for the Tritons. Yohannes and Biel now have the fourth and seventh fastest times in school history.

“Awet ran another great race,” Brown said. “He moved up seven spots in the last half, four of them in the last kilometer. Overall, the men’s team ran well in a very good field. I think we could have performed a little better, but it has been a big week for us and I am not disappointed.

Iowa Central is now off until Saturday, Sept. 21 when they travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the Woody Greeno Invitational.
