St. Edmond senior Jack McEvoy and sophomore Peyton Scott picked up second team all-North Central Conference baseball honors, the league recently announced.

McEvoy was chosen as a catcher, with Scott making the squad as a pitcher.

Webster City had a pair of unanimous first team selections in sophomore pitcher Tyler Olson and senior utility player Dylan Steen. Caleb Olson also joined the two on the first team.

Humboldt’s Owen Newton was selected by all of the NCC coaches, with teammates Joey Busse and Jacob Thurm joining him from the league runner-up. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows had two first team picks in Nate Rapp and Tyler Stein, with Algona’s Spencer Holmes also finding a spot on the squad as well.

McEvoy hit .326 in league play with three doubles, a homer and seven RBI. Scott posted the third-lowest earned run average in the conference at 1.81, allowing just eight earned runs in 31 innings. He also had 47 strikeouts and opponents hit just .190 off him.

“Jack will be a tough player to replace,” said St. Edmond head coach Mike Szalat. “He led us in hitting, so we’re going to miss his bat. He has great leadership abilities and it showed, too, being one of two captains. He was the pulse of our team.”

“Everybody that knows me, knows I’m a control freak, but I let Jack start calling pitches,” Szalat said. “I just knew I could trust him. It says volumes of how I respected him and the way he played.”

Szalat is happy that he’ll be able to have two more years with Scott.

“It’s well-deserved for Peyton,” Szalat said. “I didn’t shy away from using him against good competition. He showed a lot of maturity as a sophomore coming into games with not much warm up time.

“One of his better attributes was he was even keeled. He knew how to keep his composure and I’m looking forward to two more years of that. We’ll lean on him for two years, and I’m excited for our pitching staff moving forward.”

Noah Carlson, a junior, was picked to the third team for the Gaels after batting .318 with five RBI and two doubles in NCC action.

Tyler Olson led the NCC in pitching, going 7-1 with just five earned runs allowed and 66 strikeouts in 48 innings. Steen was 5-1 with 58 strikeouts and a league-best .489 batting average.

Newton led the NCC in RBI (23), slugging percentage (.846) and doubles (eighth).
